Admitted to Labor and Delivery

On Monday Phillip and I got up and got ready to head to our normal doctor appointment. I had been hurting a little over the weekend but nothing too alarming. I just figured that my body was starting to prepare for the birth of our little one in about 2 months. So we get to the doctor and my blood pressure is extremely high. Well, I was not too concerned because my blood pressure has been elevated my entire pregnancy. Once we got into the room with the midwife she was very concerned in the jump in the blood pressure. There were also very high traces of protein in my urine which is basically caused by the high blood pressure. I did not know what they would do but I was just expecting them to send me home and have me do another 24 hour urine test and come back in 2 weeks for my next scheduled appointment. Boy was I wrong. Before the doctor left I did tell her that my blood sugars have been elevated ever since they placed me on the gestational diabetes diet. She was concerned and placed me on insulin. She also wrote orders for me to head over to labor and delivery for observation. She had told us to make an appointment for later in the day with the nutritionist to go over the insulin since we would just be in observation in labor and delivery for a little while. We were not too excited at this point and figured we would be back home and ready to finish getting everything in order for the nursery by Monday night. Again we were wrong. After being in observation for a while the doctor on call decided that since my blood pressure was so high and the extreme amount of protein in my urine that I would need to be admitted to the OB High Risk section of labor and delivery. They did move me over and we were expecting to stay a day or two at the most and then be sent home on bedrest for the rest of the pregnancy. The doctor had already told me during observation that she was not allowing me to go back to work until after delivery.

We finally got settled into our hospital room around 3 or 3:30 on Monday afternoon. Since Phillip and I had not planned on anything like this happening we were very unprepared to be staying overnight in the hospital. Luckily Allison was able to stop by our house to get me a few essentials. Once Allison got to the hospital Phillip was able to leave to go home for a few minutes to get some additional items that we needed. Phillip did come back and stay the night in the very uncomfortable chair. Later that night we had spoken to the nurse and we were under the impression that once the doctors had finished all of the test that we would maybe stay one more night and then we would be back at home. The doctor had ordered and had begin giving me a shot that will help develop our little ones lungs just in case I have to deliver early.
